The Spix's Macaw Re-Introduction Project is tasked with reintroducing the "extinct in the wild" Spix's Macaw, the rarest parrot in the world. It is the only re-introduction of a bird species considered extinct in the wild by ICUN.

The funds will be utilized to construct the Spix’s Macaw Re-Introduction Project facilities and provide five years of operating expenses for the breeding and reintroduction of the parrots into the wild. The five year Project reintroduction projections show a viable, growing, self-sustaining wild population of Spix’s Macaws.

Mar 2, 2017 · Besides natural breeding, ACTP is also successful with artificial insemination (AI) in parrot reproduction. AI is an important tool for Spix’s Macaws which are not able to copulate naturally, either due to physical problems or the lack of a partner bird.

The culmination of the race to save the Spix’s Macaw is the physical Spix’s Macaw Re-Introduction Project facility and five years of operating expenses for captive breeding and reintroductions into the wild.

The Spix’s Macaw Re-Introduction Project facilities will be built and administered on the 6000 acre (2400 hectare) Spix’s Macaw Preserve, created in 2008 by Sheikh Saoud bin Mohammed bin Ali Al-Thani. The Al-Thani family has graciously donated the use of this preserve to the project.

The TCA specifically addresses the agreement between the Brazilian Government and the Spix’s Macaw Association founders to create, fund, and manage the project culminating with annual reintroductions of the Critically Endangered/Extinct in the Wild Spix’s Macaw.

“Soft Release” Spix’s Macaw Reintroduction. Soft release describes a gradual return to the wild whereby an aviary breed Spix’ Macaw receives support, shelter and food until it is entirely able to fend for itself.
