The Pylons above War Memorial Chapel hold a special place in Hokie hearts. They are etched with the names of every Virginia Tech student and graduate who died defending our nation’s freedom, beginning with those lost during World War I.

Most often reserved by student organizations and university departments and occasional non-university related groups for religious services, memorials, induction ceremonies, and weddings, the War Memorial Chapel is Virginia Tech’s only non-denominational chapel on campus.

Constructed between 1951 and 1960, the Memorial Chapel was is one of the leading landmarks on the Virginia Tech campus and honors students who have given their lives in defense of the United States as members of the Armed Services.

The War Memorial is one of the most inspiring places on campus. Its eight pylons stretch toward the sky, engraved both with the core values upon which the university was founded and with the names of more than 400 alumni who lost their lives in the line of duty.
