Jan 16, 2025 · After lingering in the backwaters of history for long centuries, the legends of King Arthur saw a huge revival in popularity in Victorian England. Suddenly all things medieval were in vogue, and architects, designers, artists, and poets alike all followed the fashion of the day.

In this tapestry, King Arthur sits upon a dais. Bishops and cardinals surround him beneath smaller architectural canopies. Although pulled from popular legend, Arthur would have hung alongside the historical figures Charlemagne and Godfrey of Bouillon to form the Christian Heroes tapestry.

According to legends, King Arthur (Welsh: Brenin Arthur; Cornish: Arthur Gernow; Breton: Roue Arzhur; French: Roi Arthur) was a king of Britain. He is a folk hero and a central figure in the medieval literary tradition known as the Matter of Britain.

Aug 29, 2023 · Dante Gabriel Rossetti was particularly fascinated by Arthurian legend. He painted two versions of Arthur’s Tomb, the first (above) from 1855. In these, after Arthur’s death, Lancelot leans over his tomb and starts to make love to the mourning Queen. The decoration on the side of the tomb shows King Arthur presiding over the Round Table.
