The abdominal aortic plexus (not to be confused with the thoracic aortic plexus) is formed by branches derived, on either side, from the celiac plexus and ganglia, and receives filaments from some of the lumbar ganglia.

The aortic plexus consisted of a symmetrically organized network of nerves overlying the aorta between the left renal vein and the bifurcation of the common iliac arteries. Proximal nerves were referred to as nerves ‘supplying’ the plexus, and distal nerves as ‘branches’.
