The Syracuse Academy of Science is admitting what it thought was a combination carbon monoxide/smoke detector unit in the building’s cafeteria was just a smoke detector, in a statement released to NewsChannel 9.

The discovery of the carbon monoxide was made when emergency crews responded to a report of a body being found in the school's cafeteria.

The Syracuse Academy of Science did not have carbon monoxide alarms in the cafeteria where a school employee was found dead and five others were hospitalized due to possible poisoning, an inspection by the Syracuse Fire and Codes Departments found.

Five adults were transported and another seven were treated at the scene for carbon monoxide symptoms, Syracuse fire officials said.

Fire officials said a carbon monoxide detector attached to a medical equipment bag alerted crews of the poisonous gas in the air at the charter school.
