SOUTH BEND — The traditional downtown march to mark the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 20 has been canceled because of the frigid forecast, organizers announced Wednesday.

Conditions for Monday's holiday are expected to be no warmer than minus-8 degrees with potential wind chills as low as minus-45.

Designated as “a day on, not a day off,” Martin Luther King Jr.’s National Day of Service is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday in January (the late civil rights leader’s birthday month).
