MARTIN COUNTY — A $45 million deal was struck Tuesday for a Brightline train station in downtown Stuart, just months after city commissioners there rescinded a similar deal. County commissioners approved it unanimously at a packed County Commission meeting, with about an equal number of supporters and detractors in the audience.

According to the Brightline proposal, the county would have to pay up to $15 million to construct of the station, possibly in downtown Stuart. Federal and state grants would then have to fund the remainder of the costs by June of 2027, if the county can't find the rest of the funds, Brightline can pull out of the deal.

The future of a Brightline station on the Treasure Coast moved one step closer to a reality. On Tuesday, Martin County commissioners approved a plan that will bring a Brightline station to the county.

After a more than two-hour discussion today, Commissioners voted unanimously to build a train station in the downtown Stuart area.
