A Hope Mills man surrendered Monday night on a warrant charging him with a killing that occurred earlier in the day near Grays Creek, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. Douglas Ray Chavis II, 25, is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Nikki Dwayne Savage, 30, of Hope Mills, a news release said.

A man connected to a Cumberland County shooting has turned himself in at the county detention center. Douglas Ray Chavis II surrendered after a shooting Monday afternoon that left one man dead and a woman hospitalized,

District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene. Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines, 43, was arrested and charged with his murder.
