Democratic Rep. Mike Levin will win reelection, defeating Republican challenger Matt Gunderson in a close contest for California's 49th Congressional District, NBC News projects.

Early vote counts released Tuesday night showed Democratic Rep. Mike Levin leading in California’s 49th congressional district race.

Democratic Rep. Mike Levin wins reelection to his San Diego-area seat in one of several tight races that will determine which party controls the House.

With Levin leading Matt Gunderson by 4 percentage points, the Associated Press called the race in the incumbent’s favor Tuesday.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Ken Calvert won re-election to California's 41st Congressional District – which was deemed a tossup by observers – against Democratic challenger Will Rollins. The current balance of power in the House of Representatives with Calvert's win is 217 to 207,

Democratic Congressman Mike Levin has claimed victory in the election. It comes after the official Associated Press election vote count showed him winning after a very tight race against Republican Matt Gunderson in the 49th District which includes the North County and parts of Orange County.

The perennially purple 49th District is closely divided when it comes to registration – roughly a third Democratic, a third Republican and a third Independent. In early 2023, the GOP announced it would target the district as one of just a few dozen prime pick-up opportunities nationwide.
