The figure skating community is very small and tight-knit, and Chicago area skaters who were also at the championship in Kansas are now mourning some of the athletes they competed against who died in the DC plane crash.

Following the deadly midair collision in DC, Chicago-based aviation attorney Robert Clifford is calling for immediate changes to prevent future tragedies.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found no evidence of foul play and blamed the crash on errors by the pilot, who failed to retract the plane’s spoilers, or air brakes, at the critical stage of the descent, causing the plane to stall and crash 1.5 miles short of the runway.
