The Philadelphia Zoo announced the hatching of four critically endangered Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises, the first of their species to hatch at the facility in its history.

The hatchlings’ parents, female Mommy and male Abrazzo, however, are likely well-known to zoo-goers. Both are estimated to be about 100 years old, with Mommy having arrived in Philadelphia in 1932 at about age 4, meaning if you’re been to the zoo over the last century or so, you’ve probably caught a glimpse of her.

Four 2025 hatchlings of critically-endangered Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises at the Philadelphia Zoo are being hailed as critical in the species' survival. The parents -- aptly-named Mommy and daddy Abrazzo -- are the historic zoo's oldest residents, each estimated to be around one century old, the Philadelphia Zoo said.
