A powerful, deadly earthquake struck at the heart of civil war-ravaged Myanmar on Friday, piling fresh misery on an impoverished nation that was cut off from much of the world even before this natural disaster struck.
Myanmar's military rulers let in hundreds of foreign rescue personnel on Saturday after an earthquake killed more than 1,000 people, the deadliest natural disaster to hit the impoverished, war-torn country in years.
It sent buildings in many areas toppling to the ground, buckled roads, caused bridges to collapse and burst a dam.

Damage is reported in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city (which lies 600km away from the epicentre) and in Naypyidaw, the country’s capital. The control tower of that city’s airport has collapsed, according to Mary Callahan of the University of Washington.
A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 centred in the Sagaing region near the Myanmar city of Mandalay caused extensive damage in that country and also shook neighbouring Thailand on Friday.
