The death toll from the multiple fires raging across Los Angeles County rose to 10 on Thursday night as the largest of the five blazes—the Palisades Fire—grew to cover nearly 20,000 acres amid strong winds, meaning the “Red Flag” fire weather conditions will remain in effect until Friday evening.

A fast-moving wildfire has burned nearly 800 acres near West Hills, northwest of Los Angeles, since breaking out earlier Thursday afternoon.

A possible arson suspect was arrested Thursday night near the Kenneth Fire area as fire crews continue battling flames burning near homes in Calabasas and West Hills. At around 4:30 p.m., Los Angeles police responded to reports of a man attempting to light a fire in the 21700 block of Ybarra Road in Woodland Hills.

The arrest occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Ybarra Road, just south of the fire’s origin, after local residents reportedly spotted the suspect attempting to ignite a blaze. The residents detained him until police arrived, with photos shared on the Citizen app showing officers surrounding the scene where the man was taken into custody.
