Hello there. We are planning to visit the Pantheon on the 5th of August which is the first Sunday of the month and according to the information that I have found it should be free. You are correct, it is free and you do not need anything other than just arrive. Once clear of the obligatory security check you are good to explore. I do recommend that you take an opportunity to visit the Dome - the views of the city are spectacular. The Dome visit is conducted and lasts 30 minutes, I'm not sure if the fee is waived on the 'free' Sunday but it's not too much, 3-4 Euro and well worth it.
