I don't understand what's so wow about this. An extremely crowded place, without a single place to rest, pigeon droppings everywhere, prices quite high to visit, not to mention the prices of the rest…Full review by mitudaniel
I heard that musicians play in the square at night. Does that always happen, or only on some nights? How can I find out more?

We were treated to the most incredible cello music one afternoon, the man was so good he almost moved me to tears. There are a lot of buskers around Venice and they seem to be top notch. I've only ever known of organised music in the square very occasionally in the evening and it does get very quiet once the basilica and palace close. Venice has a tourist office but it is the kind of place you want to just wander and see what you find.

Hi there, I am staying in St Marks square for New Years 2019. Do I need to buy tickets at all for the Square or is it open to the public? Can anyone recommend places to eat after the fireworks?

Dear friends, with a few little tricks you will be able to get to know the city very well. Venice is a city of old people with problems of locomotion so everything has a way. I advise you to choose a hotel near the train station where you depart from the station has several places without stairs and with the vaporettos easy to reach. First take a dream trip, take vaporetto number 1, or number 2 preferably in the front seats and go to LIDO, it takes an hour of a dream trip. Arriving in LIDO, if you want to get out and get to know the Center, take an Italian coffee and return. If you do not want to leave, stay in your seats. From there, always use vaporetto number 1 and go down at each stop and walk as far as you can go without finding a bridge. So you will know a lot about the city, many tourists will not know as well as you. The vaporetto staff are extremely helpful so you have no problems, tourists and Italians too. I live in Venice for years for 6 months every year and I know that everything will work out. The idea of having a map is very good, as Venice is a maze, but the best of Venice is to get lost. Good trip .
