One lagoon was closed completely and the other one can be seen from far (very close from the car park). I was little disappointed. Piedras Rojas was partially frozen but was still beautiful.
Hi there all, We are intend to be in SP de Atacama for 3 nights. We do understand that we need to take Diamox (Uramox) for the altitude. When should we start (how many days before)?, what is the recommended dosage ? We intend to go to Laguna Miscanti on one day and to El Tatio on the other day. Hi all I will be visiting the Atacama desert in Chile in July 2017 This question is for those who have been to both the Atacama and National Park Lauca near Putre. I was wondering, if I do the altiplanic lakes in Atacama area (e.g. Laguna Chaxa, Lagunas Miscanti & Miniques), will this be a similar experience to Lake Chungara and National Park Lauca? In other words, if I do the altiplanic lakes in Atacama tour, is there any added value in also making the trip to Lake Chungara and National Park Lauca? Some pictures look similar, but I thought it would be better to get an understanding from someone who has been to both places!

They are very different experiences. Atacama is dry and arid, Lauca is wet. I found it very rewarding to visit both. As an added bonus, you will get to visit the saltpeter mines of Humberstone on the way up. We rented a car in Calama and returned it in Arica. Do yourself a favor and rent a 4x4. It will be more important in Lauca than in San Pedro de Atacama. That all said, make it a two day trip. Day one from SPA to Iquique and then on the second day to Putre. One last word of advice. There is no gas in Putre. So make sure to fill up in Arica. The hotels will sell gas at a 75% markup (at least ours did).
